Your vehicle can breakdown in the middle of the road and leave you stranded in the middle of the road anytime. Auto-accidents happen when you least expect them. But not to worry, as there is help available, in the form of tow trucks, usually just a phone call away.
However, did you know there are 4 types of tow trucks?
- Flatbed Tow Trucks are easily the most common type of towing vehicles to be in use today. They have a long empty bed with a flat top and make use of hydraulics to move the flatbed up or down. The thing with flatbed trucks is that they are convenient and easy to use, as you can simply drive your car up the ramp or have it pulled by a chain and winch onto the bed of the truck. Although these are extremely useful in any type of auto mishap, they prove more beneficial for severely damaged vehicles. However, cars that are too low, or in undrivable condition can pose a problem.
- The Hook and Chain Tow Trucks were once very common and widely used to tow all kinds of vehicles. Being very versatile, they can be used to transport several types of cargo that may be otherwise too difficult to handle. However, today, these are mostly just used to tow wrecked the vehicle directly to the junkyard as they can cause excessive damage to the vehicle, putting pressure on the towed vehicles, damage the drivetrain in most 4×4 drives and wrapped chain can scratch or damage the vehicle. However, they can still be used to retrieve a car from the tough spot and tow it to a short distance, being more compact than a flatbed truck.
- Wheel Lift Tow Trucks operate on a mechanism very similar to the Hook and Chain Truck that uses a device that hooks around the front or rear tires of the car. Instead of chains, a metal yoke is used which is less damaging to the vehicle being towed. This yoke is hooked under the tires (depending on whether the vehicle is a front or a rear-wheel-drive) and a hydraulic lift suspends the rear or front of the vehicle in order to lift it from the ground. Although the flatbed is typically safer, these are relatively cheaper.
- Integrated Tow Trucks are specialized for heavy-duty towing purposes. They are typically used for towing other rigs and buses as they provide extra stability and strength with arms embedded in the core of the towing vehicle.
